A FRESH WAVE OF CHANGE

Iberostar Group is committed to the oceans

Seas and oceans are essential for our planet and the well-being of its population. However, they have a limited capacity. High levels of pollution are destroying marine habitats and depleting many of the resources that the seas and oceans supply that humans use. More than 80% of Iberostar Group’s hotels are on the seafront and we have taken an important step, developing an action plan that is focused on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), Life Below Water. Our objective is to contribute to the conservation of seas and oceans and the sustainability of the resources obtained from them.

1. Conservation and protection of coral reefs

Sixty percent of the world’s coral reefs are currently threatened and this percentage is rising. Protecting coral reefs will protect the biodiversity of the marine species that depend on them. The protection and preservation of coral reefs is a new line of action for Iberostar, who have launched a project to research and help restore these ecosystems. The project relies on agreements made with universities and research centres. In addition we are also running training and awareness days in all our hotels.

2. Reduction of plastic pollution

It is estimated that 200 kilograms of plastic is deposited in our oceans every second and if action is not taken, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. This is why Iberostar is replacing single-use plastic products with alternatives made from biodegradable materials, as well as implementing awareness campaigns among our employees and guests.

3. Sustainable fishing

Half of the fish reserves in the largest marine ecosystems are overexploited. Iberostar purchasing teams and kitchen advisers work with our suppliers in order to improve the traceability of fishing products. The aim is to ensure sustainability through the conservation of species and their ecosystems by avoiding and reducing overexploitation.
